Foal
Sketch a day - Day 126/365
I usually have a little rule that what I draw for sketch a day has to be something I have seen.
So I may take a photo of a thing and then draw it later. Or I may live sketch. But in general, if I sketch it, I have seen it.
But sometimes the world doesn't allow for us to be in the places we want to be. And also, sometimes we can be in places without actually physically being there.
By which I mean…
Jane has been been doing some work up near Haworth for the last couple of weeks. When she comes home she tells me about a very new foal that has been born on a farm that she sees everyday. She took a photo of the foal for me because she knows I love horses.
I just love them.
I can't ride and I don't think I even want to ride. Though I do like the idea of pony trekking across Wales. For some reason. I think I saw an edition of ‘wish you were here' with Judith Chalmers. (The OG re travel programmes) Or some such similar and became a bit obsessed with the idea. Despite not being able to ride. Anyway let's not get distracted.
I love horse and I love hearing about this little foal and how each day it learns new things.
And today I was going to draw damart mill. Because I passed it on my travels. But (while I usually love drawing damart mill) today I kept thinking about the foal. So I decided to draw that instead.
And sometimes that's just how it goes with drawing.
Sometimes horses just want to be drawn and it's not my job to say no to horses.
In general, if at all possible, I think we should always say yes to horses and foals.
Imagine that world for a moment.
I should imagine the high street would be arranged quite differently.
I should imagine there might well be many more carrot and sugar cube shops.
And that my darlings is the news.
