Mantle Piece Object

Sketch a day -Day 234/365

This is a broken lamp holder. Once a light fitting popped out at the top of the head piece. But when I bought it it was broken. I got this on a prop buying expedition with my set designer for a short film I wrote and directed years ago. The script was good. The direction wasn't. A hard but valuable lesson in life. But that's another story.

I think she must be some kind of momento made for tourists in Spain during the 1970’s. I have always thought of her as the Spanish lady. And I have plenty of imaginary conversations with her. About the strange, the mundane and the practical. She reminds me to hoover. She has opinions about Tucker our dear dog (not very polite opinions. She's more of a cat lady to be honest). But I have no idea what her real history is.

It's amazing how easy it is to project assumptions onto something; a person, object, an idea and quickly make it into something it never was.

Anyway, today I have sketched her. And I have sketched my feet. And neither is a very good drawing. Something about sketching with a biro that leaves the strokes of line on paper very exposed. There's nowhere to hide. There is no watercolour paint to smudge things. It's just the inadequate marks. Sitting there. Naked.

I noticed today that there are 131 days of this year left. And I don't feel like sketching every day has been helping me improve. I look at recent drawings and think, if anything, I am getting worse.

And then I remember it doesn't really matter what I think. Or what value i put onto things.

It's all imaginary. It's all an interpretation.

My job (if I want to get better at drawing, which I do) is only to keep drawing.

So that's what I will do.

That's mostly it. Other than to note free Palestine. πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ΈπŸ’”πŸ”₯.

That's the news.
