Birthday

Sketch a day - day 308/365

It's my birthday and so because we have fur fam, it means I am doing what I always do for my birthday. I spend the night with Jane, reassuring and cuddling pets as fireworks go off outside. I mean, all my life, having been born on the 5th of November, I kind of know what I will be doing. One way or another it's always to do with the celebrating of hanging, drawing and quartering a human being by burning and exploding shit. Whether that be attending a fire or trying to get as far away from one as possible.

Do I sound bitter?

Maybe my friends, maybe.

But I think really it's just sadness. Sadness that folks choose to ignore the stress and harm fireworks do for pets and nature. And that makes me a bit sad. Also, I don't know why folks want to celebrate the execution of someone. But here we are.

Anyway, earlier today I did a sketch of a young woman in a cafe while I was waiting to chat with Deborah about some Old Bird business. The young woman was texting and suddenly as I was drawing her, she stopped and her face lit up. It looked to me as if the text she received made her day. Perhaps she's in love and the text was a message to say someone loved her back. Or perhaps she got the job. Or perhaps she got news that a loved one is out of danger. Or maybe she passed an exam. I don't know. But I witnessed something lovely happening for her. And that moment is what I find myself thinking about as I write this blog. I am glad I saw that moment on my birthday. It reminds me not to be a grump. People are and always have been shit. And we are and always have been magnificent and beautiful. And there is the inexplicable, unresolvable, conundrum about life. And we can't change that. But we can choose what we focus on.

What else can I tell you? My friend bought me some colour ink pens for my birthday and it was fun noodling around with them. They are so lovely.

That's all I have.

No editing.
