Giant Alliums and a Washing Line

Sketch a day - Day 130/365

A day off. Last night me and my sister went to Bassline Symphony at St George's hall in Bradford. It was brilliant. So ace to see the mix of people coming together to see this cross-fertilisation of music genres. The JOY in that place last night was infectious. And then this morning Jane, my sis and I took Tucker for a walk. It's one of my early start walks, to get a bit ahead of myself for the MAP (Medical Aid for Palistine) sponsored walk I am doing (because I am nervous I will not get it all done in the time between 15 May and 15 June). It was really lovely and I am now 5K into my 107K walk. Pheweee. Starting is the hardest part of anything, I think.

After my sis went home, I had an urge to be in the sunshine and draw this afternoon.

And then I realised I was still feeling obsessed with the alliums. And not only that, I was feeling like I wanted to go BIG. I don't usually draw big. So this was an unusual feeling.

Ages ago I did a self portrait of myself on some decorating liner paper we had. And I stuck it on my writing room door. It wasn't meant to stay there for long, but it ended up being there for ages. Just because I never took it down.

Lately I have been feeling like I wanted a change.

Today I realised it was time for Alliums.

I ended up doing two giant Allium drawings.

This first one kind of pleases me, but isn't right. I realised I wanted the red background but I should have done that first and then done the drawing on top.

This was a sketch I did of the washing line while I was waiting for layers of the big alliums to dry. As EVER I filled in with toooo much colour and it doesn't work. I think it happens when I set out to draw something and then get distracted by another thing. In this picture I set out to draw the washing line but then realised it was the tree I wanted to draw. And then got distracted by the buildings behind our house and drew them too. So I have ended up with a drawing that doesn't really know what it's asking someone to look at. Must remember. Less is more. Less. Is. More.

The old picture of me on the door.

The 2nd giant alliums drawing I did today. This was my favourite one. It feels like it was drawn on a hot sunny day to me, which makes me happy. It's got sunshine in it as well as the flowers.

The 2nd one, which isn't quite right, is on the back of the door now.

That's the news.
