Musical Writing Residency

Sketch a day - Day 181/365

A day of extreme heat. I discovered that my friend in Scotland has had to race to get her mum out of her home, as wild fires sweep towards her place. It is terrifying how little people seem to understand about the reality of this climate crisis. How insane for holiday makers to go out and have a BBQ on a day like today . How insane that people do not demand climate justice now. Everywhere. All these billions ploughed into weapons, genocide and so called defense. As if arms build ups ever led to anything other than blood letting. Thankfully my friend and her family are safe. Thankful for that.

Here in the first day proper of the musical writing residency, Josh and I have been working hard. Blimey it's very hot. We are making progress but the heat is making it tough going. Musicals are such intensive processes. The heat has meant we are working in chunks then resting. On one break I went out into the paddock that lies behind the cottage to see the rams and it was so hot I had to return indoors after 15 mins. We are gunna work late this evening when it is cooler.

Today we have been focusing on listing every song we have written so far + all the songs we have not started but know we need to write. Then we have reviewed everything we have written and began to discuss edits. Later we are going to start work on a new song. We work across various songs instead of focusing in on one at a time. It helps when we get stuck.

Everything about this process is fascinating, exciting and deeply challenging.

The rams in the field are hardly critters.

That's the news.
